Meta Faces Backlash for Upholding Anti-Trans Videos Amid Policy Overhaul

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is under fire for its recent content moderation decisions that many argue endanger transgender users. The controversy centers on the company’s Oversight Board upholding the decision to keep two videos on its platforms that misgender and depict transgender individuals in a hostile manner. These videos, shared by the far-right network Libs of TikTok, mislabel the individuals and include negative commentary but do not, according to the Board’s majority, violate Meta’s updated policies on hateful conduct. The panel determined there was no direct call for violence or exclusion, and the trans minor was controversially classified as a public figure. However, a dissenting minority argued the content posed dangers and contravened international human rights standards. (GLAAD)

Critics, including LGBTQ+ advocacy groups like GLAAD, argue that Meta’s updated policies permit broader debate on gender-based access to spaces such as bathrooms and sports, aligning with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to prioritize “free expression.” However, this shift has led to concerns that it legitimizes anti-trans rhetoric and allows harmful content to remain on the platforms.

Further exacerbating concerns, a GLAAD report highlighted that Meta often fails to remove posts that violate its own hate speech policies. The report documented several examples of anti-trans content posted to Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, including posts that used hateful anti-trans slurs and others that call transgender people “demonic” and “satanic.” Despite being reported, Meta either replied that posts were not violative or simply did not take action on them.

The Oversight Board itself has criticized Meta’s enforcement of bullying and harassment rules, stating that the fundamental issue is not with the policies but their enforcement. The Board concluded that Meta’s repeated failure to take the correct enforcement action, despite multiple signals about harmful content, indicates the company is not living up to its articulated ideals on LGBTQIA+ safety. (AP News)

In response to these developments, GLAAD and other advocacy groups have called on Meta to urgently create and share an action plan for addressing the epidemic of anti-trans hate that runs rampant across its platforms. They argue that Meta’s ongoing failures to enforce their own policies against anti-LGBTQ, and especially anti-trans hate, are simply unacceptable and endanger marginalized communities.

As the debate continues, the tension between free expression and the protection of vulnerable communities remains a critical issue for social media platforms like Meta. The company’s decisions in this area will likely have significant implications for the safety and well-being of transgender individuals online.
