Google is enhancing its Search experience with the expansion of AI Mode, an experimental feature designed to handle complex, multi-part questions and provide detailed, conversational answers. Initially launched in March, AI Mode is now more widely accessible to users in the U.S. aged 18 and over who are enrolled in Google’s Labs program.
AI Mode distinguishes itself from traditional search by allowing users to engage in a more interactive dialogue, asking follow-up questions and delving deeper into topics without starting a new search. This conversational approach is aimed at competing with services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. (TechCrunch)
One of the notable enhancements includes the introduction of visual place and product cards within AI Mode. These cards provide quick access to information such as ratings, reviews, opening hours for local businesses, and real-time prices, promotions, and shipping details for products. For instance, searching for “best vintage shops with midcentury modern furniture” will yield nearby store suggestions complete with relevant details.

Additionally, AI Mode now features a left-side panel on desktop that saves past searches, allowing users to revisit previous queries and continue their exploration seamlessly.
Google is also testing an AI Mode tab directly within the Search interface, making it more accessible to a broader audience beyond the Labs environment. This move signifies Google’s commitment to integrating advanced AI capabilities into everyday search experiences. (The Verge)
