Apple has rolled out the latest iOS 18.5 update, bringing a significant upgrade for iPhone 13 users—emergency satellite connectivity. Previously exclusive to iPhone 14 and newer models, this life-saving feature is now accessible to a wider audience.

The satellite-based system is designed to help users stay connected in critical situations where Wi-Fi or cellular networks are unavailable. It enables emergency SOS messaging via satellite, allows users to text contacts, share their location, and even request roadside assistance—all without a standard signal.
With iOS 18.5, Apple is extending support to work with satellite services from select carriers, including T-Mobile’s collaboration with Starlink. Users can check their device’s compatibility and availability of satellite services by navigating to the Settings > Cellular section on their iPhones.
This satellite feature has already proven its value in real-world emergencies—credited with helping rescue efforts during wildfires, locating missing hikers, and saving lives when traditional communication methods failed.
In addition to this headline feature, iOS 18.5 brings several smaller but useful enhancements:
- Screen Time Update: Parents now receive alerts when children correctly input the parent passcode to modify Screen Time settings.
- Mail App Upgrade: A new tab for the “All Mail” folder makes navigating your inbox easier.
- New Pride Wallpaper: Users can show support and personalization with the newly added Pride-themed background.
- Apple TV Enhancements: A simplified method for subscribing to channels and services via Apple TV on smart TVs and streaming devices.
- Bug Fixes: Fixes include a glitch that caused the Apple Vision Pro app to open with a black screen and several performance issues affecting Siri and enterprise applications.
Alongside iOS 18.5, Apple also released updates for other platforms, including:
- iPadOS 18.5: Primarily focused on bug fixes.
- watchOS 11.5
- visionOS 2.5
- macOS Ventura 13.7.6 and Sonoma 14.7.6: Both focused on security and stability improvements.
With this update, Apple continues to emphasize user safety and experience, bringing high-end features to older devices and streamlining daily functionality.
