Meta Tests AI Photo Suggestions in Facebook App

AI-Generated Suggestions from Your Photos

Meta is testing a new Facebook feature that leverages AI to analyze and suggest creative ideas from users’ phone camera rolls—even if the photos haven’t been uploaded to the platform. These suggestions may include collages, recap videos, AI restyling, and themed highlights such as birthdays or graduations.

How It Works

When some users attempt to add media to Facebook Stories via the mobile app, a pop-up appears asking if they’d like to enable “cloud processing” for their camera roll. According to a screenshot shared by TechCrunch, the message states:

“Get ideas like collages, recaps, AI restyling or themes like birthdays or graduations. To create ideas for you, we’ll select media from your camera roll and upload it to our cloud on an ongoing basis, based on info like time, location, or themes.”

Meta emphasizes that the generated suggestions are only visible to the user unless they choose to share them.

Data Usage and Privacy

Tapping “Allow” on the prompt opts the user into Meta’s AI Terms, which permit analysis of the media, facial features, and metadata like date and object presence. Meta clarifies that this data will not be used for ad targeting.

Additionally, Meta assures users that:

  • Camera roll uploads are used solely to improve content suggestions.
  • The uploaded content is checked for safety and integrity.
  • It is not used to train broader AI models.

Limited Rollout and Testing Regions

According to Meta spokesperson Maria Cubeta, the feature is currently being tested with a small number of users in the United States and Canada. Not all users are seeing the option, as this is part of a controlled test.

Cubeta stated:

“We’re exploring ways to make content sharing easier by testing suggestions of ready-to-share and curated content from a person’s camera roll. These suggestions are opt-in only, only shown to you unless you decide to share them, and can be turned off at any time.”

What’s Next?

Though the feature is still in early testing, it signals Meta’s continued push to integrate generative AI into everyday user experiences. Whether it becomes a staple of the Facebook app remains to be seen, especially as user reactions—and privacy concerns—begin to surface.

Meta has not issued further comments on the feature’s timeline or broader rollout plans.
