Tinder Adds Face Check for New California Users

Techxnow News | July 2025

New Users Must Complete Face Check

Tinder now requires all new users in California to verify their identity using a facial recognition scan called Face Check. As Axios reports, the app prompts users to record a short video selfie during sign-up to confirm that their profile photos match their real identity.

FaceTec Powers New Biometric Technology

The new feature runs on biometric software from FaceTec. After completing the scan, users receive a photo-verified badge on their profile—aimed at building trust and minimizing fake accounts.

Tinder also uses the encrypted face map to detect and prevent duplicate accounts, blocking users from creating multiple profiles with different credentials.

Tinder Expands Its Safety Toolkit

This move builds on Tinder’s growing list of safety features. The platform introduced photo verification in 2021, video verification in 2023, and in 2024, launched Share My Date—a tool that lets users share match details with friends and family for added safety.

Why California?

Tinder selected California as the next launch market after Canada and Colombia due to the state’s strong online privacy laws, large user base, and diverse demographics. Yoel Roth, Head of Trust and Safety at Match Group (Tinder’s parent company), confirmed the choice in an interview with Axios.

Other Dating Apps Join the Trend

Tinder isn’t the only app tightening security. Bumble introduced its own ID verification and Share Date feature earlier this year. Still, both platforms face ongoing criticism. Some users report being banned without explanation, while advocacy groups claim companies don’t do enough to remove harmful users or report them to authorities.

What’s Next for Face Check?

Right now, Tinder only requires Face Check for new users in California, but Roth said the company will closely monitor feedback before deciding whether to expand the feature to other markets.

Safety as a Core Strategy

New Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff, who also recently took over at Tinder, has made safety a top priority. In a May LinkedIn post, he wrote:

“Our users deserve and expect as safe an environment as possible when meeting new people. It is a moral and business imperative to prioritize safety in every feature we design, policy we implement, and interaction we enable.”
